Position Qualification:

  • A bachelor's degree in speech communications, speech language/pathology, or communication disorder/speech sciences OR a bachelor's degree (in any major) plus 24 semester hours in speech language hearing sciences from regionally accredited college/university
  • Certificate of completion of an approved speech-language pathology assistant program which includes
    • a minimum 100-clock hour school-based practicum under the supervision of an ASHA-certified, CDE-licensed school speech-language pathologist
  • Clinical experience preferred

Additional Expectations (depending on licensure):


  • To provide an effective instructional program for identified students with a speech language disability. He/she shall carry out these functions according to the teacher’s section of the School Handbook.
  • To evaluate or screen previously enrolled speech/language cases, pupils enrolled in school for the first time and referrals.
  • To screen or assist in screening for possible hearing disabilities for all children in designated grades enrolled in schools where assistance is requested or adequate nursing service is not available.
  • To secure written parental permission for every child needinga speech/language assessment. The speech and language will follow the process and staffing procedures as established by the School and CDE.
  • To carry out those assessments procedures necessary to arrive at a specific speech disabilitydiagnosis and formulation of remediation and development objectives.
  • To arrange, along with the principal, a full staffing for those children who have a speech/language disabilitythat is effecting them educationally.
  • To provide appropriate direct speech/language therapy services to those children determined to be in need of services.
  • To consult with both regular and special education teachers on a regular basis, or as needed, when necessary to foster more positive speech/language patterns in a particular child.
  • To complete all necessary record keeping requirements of School to include progress monitoring.
  • To carry out additional duties, as seen fit by the School administration.
    • Childfind – To assess 0-3 population, as needed
    • Preschool – To screen and/or assess 3-5 year olds referred by various agencies and or general population.
    • Possible member of Alternative Augmentative Communication Team
