FORESTRY AIDE – SAN DIEGO COAST DISTRICT / TIJUANA ESTUARY SECTOR

(Applicants may obtain verification from the CalWORKs program).” The Forestry Aide reporting location is the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve, 301 Caspian Way, Imperial Beach, CA 91932. This position will report to the District Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory) and works under the direction of the District Environmental Scientist. All appointments are temporary and will not become permanent. Under supervision, as a temporary employee, the Forestry Aide provides assistance in natural resource management tasks such as exotic plant control, fuel reduction, vegetation monitoring, and habitat restoration. This position is responsible for vegetation management, including invasive plant removal by manual, mechanical or chemical methods; installing native container plants; and thinning of native vegetation for fuel modification projects. General duties also include: data collection and mapping using Geographic Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information System (GIS); installing permanent and temporary fencing; installing and repairing irrigation systems; grunion, vegetation and bird monitoring; documenting work in statewide databases, and assisting with the preparation of reports. This position will work with the public as a State Park representative and work alongside volunteer groups. Occasional weekend work may be required and must be willing to adjust workdays as needed. Applicants should be flexible, open minded, and able to reason logically to draw sound conclusions; follow directions well; be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships; work well with the public as a State Park representative; be willing to do repetitive tasks. This position may perform heavy physical labor related to resource tasks including lifting and carrying up to 45 lbs. This position is subject to live scan fingerprint clearance and a valid Class C driver’s license. You must answer the questions addressing your driver’s license on your application. The incumbent’s work schedule will be Monday through Thursday, 7:30am to 4:00pm. This position may work up to 1500 hours within 12 consecutive months. This position is designated as not telework eligible. The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment. Possession of a valid driver’s license of the appropriate class and a safe driving record as documented by the Department of Motor Vehicles within 60 days prior to appointment. (A safe driving record is one free from convictions in the past two years for repeated moving violations or a single serious violation, such as drunk driving or reckless driving.) Work Environment:
Most of each workday will be spent working outside in state park units in the San Diego Coast District. Field work is outdoors in various types of weather; work in unpleasant conditions (e.g., rainy/hot weather) and work in hazardous situations (e.g., herbicide). While at the base of operation, this position works in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting, typically 1-2 hours per workday.
Physical Abilities:
Ability to perform manual labor (e.g., digging, lifting, carrying, loading). Requires repetitive movement of heavy objects. Ability to walk across uneven terrain in both uphill and downhill conditions to perform the duties associated with the job. Stand for long periods of time (up to 8 hours) to perform the duties associated with the job.
Cognitive Abilities:
Read, write, and speak in a clear and concise manner. Develop practical solutions to problems to make sound decisions. Perform basic mathematical computations associated with assigned duties. Make sound decisions given available information and situational parameters. Utilizes measurements to measure, mix and apply various chemical solutions.
